SafeNest-hosted panel discussion will address possible deportation action and how local immigrants might prepare
Category
On the campaign trail, President-elect Donald Trump promised to seal the southern border and carry out the “largest deportation” in U.S. history. It’s unclear whether, or how, that plan will play out or affect people who are in the country illegally.
SafeNest, a nonprofit devoted to ending domestic and sexual violence in Southern Nevada, will hold a panel discussion about how organizations that support immigrants might prepare for what’s to come.
The panel, running 2 to 4 p.m. at SafeNest’s headquarters, 3900 Meadows Lane, will include speeches from:
- Giovanni Alonso, directing attorney of the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada’s
Immigration Advocacy Project. - Alissa Cooley Yonesawa, managing attorney of the University of Nevada, Las
Vegas, Immigration Clinic, William S. Boyd School of Law. - Kathia Quiros, secretary, SafeNest board of directors, immigration attorney at GWP
Immigration Law. - Adriana Villarreal Buenfil, consul for protection and legal affairs, Consulate of Mexico in
Las Vegas. - Mariana Sarmiento Hernandez, manager for Undocumented Student Program, Nevada
State University.
Thirty advocates and community partners who work with immigrants who are in the country illegally will also attend, explaining how to apply for visas and to take the steps toward citizenship.
SafeNest officials will discuss their efforts to help people in the country illegally find work and local support.
